Hoppity Gets Lost - Week 9 Oct. 28 to Nov. 1

Field Trip - Peter Murray's Corn Farm

Pumpkin Patch in Chase, BC

Date: Saturday October 26th

We visited Peter Murray's Corn Farm in Chase. We had booked a pumpkin patch tour. We headed out on the hay stack trailer to start out with a couple cobs of corn each to feed the sheep. Sheep are raised there for meat. The kids got to feed the sheep and learn about how the sheep dog cares for them.

We then headed over to the pumpkin patch to pick our pumpkin.

Career we learned about: Farmer

Hoppity Gets Lost

I loved all the health and safety discussions that our previous week brought about BUT none of it really had much to do with the book. Franklin gets lost in the woods so we had talked about getting lost in the wilderness:
  • Staying put so someone can find you
  • Call out so that you can be located
  • Ways to keep warm
I remembered reading Hoppity Gets Lost as a little girl. In fact my Mom still has this book in her house but I ordered it in so that we could review what to do in a more common situation where we are lost like a department store which is what Hoppity Gets Lost is all about.

Health and Safety Discussion:

We talked about what people are safe people to trust when we are lost in a store:
  • Someone that works at the store
  • A security guard in uniform
  • Go straight to somebody at a check-out or behind a desk
  • Don't be scared - they know how to find lost Mommies and Daddies

Other Subjects:

PE -
Tuesday Gymnastics at TRU
The kids have been heading out to play, ride bikes and watch bugs between 12 and 1 pm each day.

PHONICS AND READING: Reading Eggs
Explode the Code
We worked through another BOB reader

MATH: Counting lesson

SCIENCE: We are in Earth Science right now in A Reason for Science. This week Liam completed his observation of different rocks found in the earth and how they are formed:

  • Pyrite
  • Pumice
  • Wonderstone
Experiment:
We compared each rock by look and feel and observed each in water and if water effected its texture.

Comments

  1. I remember the Hoppity Books! I collected them and read them to my own children-- even this one! They were great books. :)

  2. I think we just had this one but it was a sweet book. Although, reading it as an adult, Hoppity's Mom is a bit of a funny character, not super attentive and then she let's him stay with the store manager after she finds him so she can keep shopping - struck me as funny.

  3. I actually can't remember too much of it, but I do remember the book was well worn, so my kids must have liked it! ;)
