Surprise - Friends and Feelings
Mother Goose Time

Circle Time and Friendly Beehive

Each month our kids welcome a new Friendly Bee to come to the hive on our circle time display. This month our bee is Respectful bee. Here is a game we played to learn how to be respectful with each others' things. We placed each of our shoes out and had to take turns jumping through our shoe obstacle course without stepping on each others shoes. We talked about how being too rough or careless with others things might damage them or make the owner feel bad because we are not taking care. Showing care for others is being respectful.

If we accidentally stepped on someones shoes we would stop and apologize to them. Being respectful is about apologizing even for accidents because we are showing consideration for our friends' feelings.

After playing the game we had each earned our respectful bee badge.

From playing the game the kids had learned both the word and the concept of being respectful. Respectful is not just something we show towards those in authority, it's something we show to give consideration towards the feelings of others.

We used our monthly theme poster to identify the different emotions on the friends' faces. Surprise was the most difficult one for them to guess accurately. It made me think that the expression of surprise usually comes with startle or fear, therefore looking like 'scared' or excited and happy, therefore looking like 'happy.'

Practicing our 'Surprised' expressions

Animal Emotions - Drama

I loved how this game stretched the kids' imaginations. The rolled one dice to tell them what animal they were supposed to act like and a second to tell them what emotion they were supposed to give that animal.
A sad dog.

Math and Counting

This month our box came with these really cool bus counters. We've been practicing counting to 10, 20 and counting by 2's to 10.

Surprise - Clown Shakers

We made shakers out of paper plates and beans and then played a game of hide and seek using our shakers to hide with and lead the person too us to experience the feeling of being surprised when we were found.

The kids loved creating this craft more than playing afterwards.
